ACCRA, Ghana — Ghana is pursuing additional visa-free travel agreements for its citizens while enhancing the security of its national passport, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 African Union Executive Council Session of Foreign Ministers in Ethiopia, Ablakwa said the government is prioritizing efforts to improve the global standing of the Ghanaian passport.
“We want the Ghanaian passport to be the most valued passport in Africa and among the most respected globally, and we are on course,” he said.
Ablakwa said Ghana has secured more than 10 visa-waiver agreements, including one with Morocco, and indicated that further deals are expected to be announced in the coming months.
He said expanded travel access would not compromise passport security, noting that Ghana has introduced advanced technological features in its travel documents.
“The passport is now among the most secure in terms of its security features. It is fully chip-embedded and has moved beyond standard biometric technology, placing Ghana ahead of many countries,” he said.
The minister also said passport fees have been reduced by 30% to improve accessibility for citizens.
“Passports should not be a luxury. Every Ghanaian should be able to afford one,” he said.
Ghana’s push for visa-free travel is part of broader efforts to improve citizen mobility, strengthen diplomatic relations and enhance the country’s global profile.
